WAKE, REM, NREM Classification File Creator
For vigilance 3-state analyses, a special program must be applied to the binfb files to generate a file that classifies sleep states into REM and NREM. As of now, this is only for mice (a rat version has NOT been developed/validated) and requires a good signal-to-noise ratio in the recorded data such that the signals from respiration can be consistently observed. The REM detection algorithm relies on changes breathing patterns, which may be obscured by noise levels (external platform/cage vibrations or cross-talk) or the respiration signal may not be strong enough (excess bedding or a very or weak animal). Therefore, it is recommended only for use with our film sensor (custom cage) systems and on recordings greater than 24 hours (for robust calibration). When the program is running, an instruction window appears. When OK is checked, a prompt appears to select the recording files to process will appear. Multiple files can be selected. The program requires about 90 seconds per mouse per day to run on a typical PC, so for large files or many files, this may run for several hours. When finished, the 3-state file (wss extension) will be saved in the same folder as the selected binfb file. This must be in the same directory as the other recorded files for SleepStats 4 to load it and present an option for 3-state analysis.
